NPCI moves to mask UPI users’ mobile numbers on payment screens
Banks and UPI apps have been asked to hide users’ phone, UPI ID and bank-account details on transaction interfaces by 4 September. Only the last four digits of a mobile number would be displayed, alongside mobile-number-independent UPI IDs.
NPCI has asked banks and UPI apps to mask users’ phone, UPI ID and bank-account details on transaction screens, supporting DPDP compliance. Platforms will show only the last four mobile digits and offer mobile-number-independent UPI IDs.
Why this matters
The privacy requirement follows NPCI’s reported work on offline NFC tap-to-pay for UPI and comes as smaller UPI apps and fintechs raise concerns that UPI Meta could concentrate checkout choice.
